Getting Married at Pretty Place Chapel: What Couples Should Know Before Booking
Tucked into the Blue Ridge Mountains at YMCA Camp Greenville, Pretty Place Chapel is one of those places that makes you stop and take it all in. The open-air chapel looks out over the mountains, with rows of wooden pews and the iconic cross creating a setting that feels simple, peaceful, and completely unforgettable.
If you’re dreaming of getting married at Pretty Place Chapel, there are a few things worth knowing before you officially book your date. Pretty Place is a little different from a traditional wedding venue, and understanding how the experience works ahead of time can help you create a wedding day that feels intentional rather than rushed.
Where Is Pretty Place Chapel?
Pretty Place Chapel, officially known as the Fred W. Symmes Chapel, is located at YMCA Camp Greenville in Cleveland, South Carolina.
The chapel sits high in the Blue Ridge Mountains, making it a popular choice for couples traveling from both South Carolina and North Carolina. It’s also within driving distance of Greenville, Asheville, Brevard, Travelers Rest, and several other mountain towns.
Because of its location, Pretty Place can be a beautiful choice for a destination wedding weekend or an intimate celebration where the mountains are just as much a part of the experience as the ceremony itself.
Pretty Place Chapel Is a Ceremony-Only Venue
This is probably the biggest thing to know when you’re first planning your wedding.
Pretty Place Chapel is designed for your ceremony rather than your entire wedding day. Your chapel reservation includes use of the chapel itself, but couples will need to arrange their own photographer, officiant, flowers, music, catering, and reception plans. There is also no reception area on the property.
You can have your ceremony surrounded by the mountains, take some time for portraits afterward, and then continue the celebration somewhere else with the people you love.
That could mean an intimate dinner, a private estate, a mountain lodge, or a reception venue in one of the nearby towns.
How Much Time Do You Get at Pretty Place?
Weddings are currently booked in a two-hour block by Pretty Place. Your setup and cleanup also need to happen within your reserved time.
Two hours can sound like plenty of time until you start adding everything together.
Guests need time to arrive and get seated. You may want to have a first look, exchange gifts, or get ready nearby. Then there’s the ceremony, family photos, wedding party photos, and portraits of the two of you.
This is why I always recommend thinking about what actually matters most to you before creating your timeline.
If your dream is to spend a lot of time taking portraits together after the ceremony, build your schedule around that.
If having photos with every family member is important, make sure you leave room for those too.
Your wedding day doesn’t need to feel rushed just because your chapel reservation is shorter than a traditional full-day venue.
It just needs to be planned intentionally
Where Should You Get Ready?
Pretty Place does have a space where you can get into your wedding dress before the ceremony, which can be helpful if you’re planning to arrive at the chapel already having your hair and makeup finished.
However, it isn’t a traditional bridal suite where you can spend the morning getting ready. There isn’t a space at the chapel for your full hair and makeup team to set up and have you get ready from start to finish.
Because of this, most couples will want to plan to have hair and makeup done somewhere else before heading to Pretty Place. A nearby cabin, rental home, hotel, or other getting-ready location can give you a more comfortable space to spend the morning with your closest people and capture those getting-ready moments before leaving for the chapel.
Then, once you arrive at Pretty Place, you can use the designated space to get into your dress and prepare for the ceremony.
Planning this part of your day ahead of time can make a big difference. Instead of trying to fit everything into your chapel reservation, you can give yourself plenty of time to actually enjoy the morning and arrive at Pretty Place feeling relaxed and ready to get married.
What About Your Reception?
Since there is no reception space at Pretty Place, you’ll want to decide where you’ll celebrate after the ceremony.
Nearby areas like Brevard, Greenville, Travelers Rest, and Asheville offer different options depending on the size and feel of your celebration.
Maybe that’s dinner at a favorite restaurant with your closest people. You could also have a private dinner at a mountain cabin or plan a larger reception at a traditional wedding venue.
Or maybe you don’t want a reception at all.
There isn’t one right way to do a Pretty Place wedding.
Think About Your Guest Count
Pretty Place can be beautiful for intimate weddings and elopements because the setting naturally keeps the focus on the people and the ceremony.
If you’re planning a larger celebration, however, you’ll want to think through the logistics of having everyone travel to a mountain location and then continue on to another location afterward.
Pretty Place is one of those locations where I think it is worth choosing your photographer based on more than whether you like their Instagram feed.
The scenery is incredible, but photographing a wedding here comes with its own challenges.
The chapel is open to the mountains, which means the lighting can change significantly throughout the day. Your photographer needs to know how to photograph you while still preserving the mountain landscape that makes Pretty Place so recognizable.
You want photographs that show the setting, but you also want photographs that feel like you.
When choosing your photographer, I would recommend asking to see a full Pretty Place gallery rather than only a handful of favorite images.
What Time Should You Get Married at Pretty Place?
Your ceremony time can make a big difference in the overall feel of your Pretty Place wedding and your photographs.
One of my favorite times for couples to get married at Pretty Place is sunrise. There is something incredibly special about watching the sun come up over the Blue Ridge Mountains during your ceremony. The sky can shift through soft pinks, oranges, and golden tones as the morning light comes in, creating such a beautiful backdrop for those first moments as a married couple.
Sunrise is also a favorite among couples who want a quieter, more intimate feel to their wedding day. There’s something about being up in the mountains early in the morning, before the rest of the day begins, that makes the experience feel especially meaningful.
Of course, sunrise isn’t the only beautiful option. Morning and afternoon ceremonies can also create gorgeous light and give you more flexibility with your wedding day schedule.
When choosing your ceremony time, think about more than just what time is convenient. Consider the season, the light, how much time you want for portraits, and what you’d like to do before and after the ceremony.
Don't Forget Your Marriage License
Pretty Place Chapel is located in Greenville County, South Carolina, so couples getting married here will need a South Carolina marriage license. A licensed or ordained minister or a South Carolina-licensed notary can perform the ceremony.
It’s one of those small planning details that can easily get buried underneath everything else, so make sure it’s on your checklist early.
Is Pretty Place Chapel Right for You?
Pretty Place isn’t necessarily the right venue for every couple.
If you’re looking for one location where you can get ready, have your ceremony, enjoy cocktail hour, and dance into the night, a traditional wedding venue may make more sense.
But if you’re drawn to the idea of keeping things a little simpler and letting the setting speak for itself, Pretty Place can be an incredible place to begin your wedding day.
You can have a meaningful ceremony surrounded by the mountains, spend time taking portraits together, and then continue the celebration somewhere that feels personal to you.
And that’s one of my favorite things about a Pretty Place wedding.
It doesn’t have to be an entire production.
It can simply be about getting married somewhere beautiful, being surrounded by the people you love, and giving yourself enough space to actually enjoy the day.
